    Canon Character Section:
History: here, and here, and here.

    Personality:

If someone were to describe Grant Ward in a single word, it would be gruff. On initial meetings, he's very down to business, a very serious person. A man of few words. He'd be the first to tell you he's the 'alone' type, someone who works alone to get things done and done quickly. He has horrible people skills, doesn't get jokes. He's the guy who you send in to be the whole solution. If you want a bomb diffused, he's your guy. But welcoming committees? That's another story.

He's very dedicated to what he does. He's a specialist. Even Agent Hill gave him the highest espionage skills since Natasha Romanoff. It means he doesn't mind doing the things that are uncomfortable to other people. He's willing to get things done, trained to be 100% the solution. He's extremely observant, cool as a cucumber under pressure. He's excellent in hand to hand combat, knows at least six different languages, and is a natural leader. That's probably why he's so anti-social. He's in his element when working alone. But that doesn't mean that he isn't fiercely loyal. He'd gladly give his life for SHIELD.

He's also the guy who will, without thinking, jump out of a plane to save his teammate. He has a strong moral foundation, and will speak his mind no matter what. He's one of those men who thinks secrets are meant to be kept for a reason. Besides being fiercely loyal to his job, he's also fiercely loyal to his team. They really are like a family, and Ward is like the older brother who will do whatever he can to protect them. He feels helpless when he's not able to protect them from things he can't see or understand. He will always put people before himself. If he gets hurt, he immediately puts on the 'don't worry about it' attitude.

He's not without his charm though. He's cracked some jokes, like calling Skye's hacking 'insider backchannel voodoo,' and wasn't even afraid to make fun of himself being this 'impressive hero type.' He's competitive amongst his friends, likes board games, and has even been known to crack a smile and give a compliment. Even then, he really doesn't do well with emotion. He gets passive-agressive when he gets angry enough, and he likes to keep his past in the past and completely forget about it.

There's a reason why he doesn't mention it at all. He states his defining moment was realizing he had to protect him and his little brother from his elder brother, who tormented him. That's when he realized that he'd never let anyone be hurt like that again.

-As of recent events in canon, we've discovered plenty of interesting things about him, especially about his loyalties.

It's all a cover, a fake. Sure, he really is trained. He's trained to get the job done, to be the whole solution. There is a reason why he has the highest skills since Agent Romanoff. Like Hydra, he's been hiding in plain sight the entire time. He's fooled everyone into thinking that he's dedicated his life to SHIELD's cause. No one suspected it, no one even thought twice to question his allegiences. He's been in deep cover for who knows how long, and Coulson's team was only another mission. Get close to the team, have them trust him, neutralize any undetermined variables.

As far as anyone else knows, he's still a dedicated member of SHIELD, who wants to take down HYDRA as much as anyone else does. He's going to keep that cover up by any means necessary. No one has any reason to suspect that he'd switch sides, and he's going to keep it that way. Keep to the mission, stick to the facade he's crafted. The mission parameters might have changed a bit, more new variables, but he'll figure it out. Who wants to seem disloyal in front of Coulson and Captain America, right? He'll bide his time until the right moment presents itself, if it comes to that.

Up until episode 19, Ward had been lying to everyone stating that Agent Victoria Hand had them taking the long way to the Fridge [SHIELD's most secure containment facility] to drop off Agent Garrett. Little does everyone know that Ward's taken out Agent Hand and the rest of the team of agents that had accompanied them. He's fully submersed himself into the person he was before assuming the role of 'good' Agent Ward, still willing to get the job done, but not caring who got hurt in the process. He's more willing to kill someone than disable them, and he pretty much owes his life to Garrett.

We learn that despite everything still being the mission - neutralizing Agent May because she was the main threat, befriending the team by saving Agent Simmons - Skye was still the unknown variable. Everything about Skye, meaning his feelings, were still the truth. Everything he felt for her was real. Her getting hurt wasn't in the plan, and he'd still do everything in his power to protect her and keep her safe. He tries to do the best he can when he's ordered by Garrett to obtain her to decrypt the hard drive, but she rats him out to local law enforcement. Deathlok has to back him up, which was not part of the agreement. A confrontation and nearly dying to have Skye confess, Coulson rescues Skye from the Bus mid-air and he's left having to deal with the aftermath.

By the time he arrives in Teleios, everyone knows he's a traitor. Skye knows, Coulson and Maria Hill know, and therefore the rest of the team knows. He's immediately going to be on guard, trying to figure out what allies he can make and hiding from any and all SHIELD agents he knows until he's found suitable arrangements.

Or they find him first, but he's pretty good at hiding.

Powers/Abilities: Ward has no superhuman powers, but he is an advanced hand-to-hand combatant, proficient is several types of firearms and is an expert marksman, speaks six different languages [including English, French, Russian, and Italian], a skilled spy [Coulson says he has the best scores since Agent Romanoff]. He's in peak physical condition, though not superhuman.

Appearance: Looking sharp in a suit or if you'd prefer, action hero mode.

He's still not exactly sure why Coulson wanted him assigned to this team.

Like he previously told them, he was trained from day one as a specialist. But this team, this 'welcoming committee' wasn't even close to his style. He didn't work well with others, and now he was going to be on a team that he was more than likely going to babysit, which was also something he didn't like to do. When you have to babysit someone, your chances of getting killed go higher.

Report to the hanger, his orders were, find FitzSimmons and settle in. He was pretty sure there were other agents plenty qualified for this team, with better personal skills and who were willing to step into this kind of mission. But when you're greeted by a dead agent who wants you specifically on his team, it's pretty hard to say no.

And with one look at the Bus, he could see why. It was pretty impressive. Maybe he could do some good after all.
